Our Turkey Day

You guys.

Mom and Dad called me and said they simply could not go on another day without knowing how all of our Thanksgivings were. They agonized, knowing full well that our bellies were to be stuffed nigh unto entering our esophaguses, our sides would ache from the laughter, and the exhaustion that would ensue without their help was sheer torture to them.

Well, the day was awesome- for almost half of the siblings who attended. The rest of you will have to give your own full report, or you'll be willed with only the shed outside "the cottage".

So, upon arrival at Barbara's, this little fella of Spencer's greeted us: his name is "Tiger". (I think they give all of their pets that name.) Okay, except Chico. But no, someone else named that bird, so that still doesn't count.

It's like he's modeled before, Spencer.

Spencer is so cute, telling Nathan to only use one finger to touch him. I thought only experienced mothers knew that trick, but he proves me wrong.

He said it's called a Bearded Dragon. Another funny tidbit for you is that Mickenzie is deathly afraid of reptiles. Spencer let him go & he ran straight for her. With all her might she tried not to scream , and she escaped him, unscathed. I think we convinced her of the hierarchy of reptiles though, that thing is waaaaay better than a snake.

Some of Lincoln's first steps! He grew so much since last month, he seems more like a little kid now. And his favorite trick is to see how many times he can get Mommy to help him up and down the stairs- which she does because you cannot resist how cute his pleading eyes are. You'll do anything for that sweet face (and thighs).

For sure, the highlight of the day was seeing Scott & Kathy & kids. Cameron is squishy all over. Karina, you would definately want one just like him. He's so calm! And has such a perfect round head to match that round abundant body of his.

Spencer and Eric made all sorts of elaborate plans to beat up Jared & Scott. It's like extreme teasing becomes the social norm when they all get together. And such a spectacle they make of themselves!

Do you want to see a trick?

Man, they have talent.

And then... it was time for these guys to go. Oh, that is sad. (So then we came down from Barbara's ceiling.) So you did miss out on that part, mom and dad.

See? Content doesn't get any cuter than that. Sorry about your eyes, Kath. I would've re-took it if I'd noticed it.

Here's the FINALE...

Carving the most delicious bird I have ever eaten. So moist and tasty. I recommend Barbara every year for roasting the turkey.

(He was way into it.)

We're thankful that this time next year, we'll be awaiting your homecoming!

Thanks for posting the pics of your Thanksgiving! Those are great ones. I was just wondering myself, today, actually, how everyone's holiday went, so it was good to read about yours (even the sad part when Kathy's family had to go. Duh, I had to explain that scene in Mary Poppins to Jayson, who didn't remember it. Now he does).

We had a GREAT time with Brooke home from BYU, even though it was short. Just like old times, but better. We also had a young couple from our ward join us and the missionaries too. Our turkeys turned out great and we decided it definitely helps to use a meat thermometer, which we did for the first time ever, so you don't overcook them (smoked one and BBQ'd one--we like lots of leftovers!). Soooooo good!!

How do you all eat your leftovers? Our favorite is turkey gravy over mashed potatoes. And sandwiches, of course, but I heard someone say they make turkey lasagna and love it. Haven't tried it. The rest of it is in the freezer for later use. Now we're pretty much turkied out for a while. I made 9 pies, too. You know, a pie per person (close). Pie is great for breakfast the next few days after.

On Friday, Jay and the boys played in the annual turkey bowl football game, while we girls did NOT go shopping but got our hair cut instead.

On Saturday we went and chopped down a tree (ok, new rules: the people that own the farm have to chainsaw it themselves, but we can watch). And no, even though they all look great, you cannot pick a tree in just a few minutes. You must walk around forever inspecting them all before you pick. We tried a very full and big noble this year, unlike the grand firs we usually get.

Now it's back to the routine things, but the break was so nice. I've got to get ready for a primary meeting tomorrow, think some more about the Nativity the primary children are doing for the ward social, and think some more about filling the empty positions we have, 2009's plans and sharing time, which I am in charge of this month. We need more nursery leaders and when I told the Bishop I'd be happy to do it, he said to take a number. Would anyone like to move here and work in primary with me? We need lots of kids, too!

Have a great week! Love to all,
Jana

p.s. Kathy, did you like the Twilight movie? I assume you have seen it. Becky? Anyone else? Brooke and I thought about seeing it together when she was here but we ran out of time.

Aw, C'mon Aunt Becky, you gotta admit that Tigger and Tiger were better names for cats than Kiwi and Applesauce like we'd originally planned....
We've had Cami and Scooter and Buttons and Flyer and Hopper and Thumper....etc etc...
besides, does it make sense to name a cute, fuzzy bunny a fearsome name like Tiger?!
Spencer should've named him Stinky or somethin' cuz those crickets smell terrible and he eats e'm!

Spencer eats crickets?

Yeah, when he gets hungry you have to put spencer in his cage and he gets all excited cuz he knows he's going to get a treat. But first you have to put the cricket in this bag first and sprinkle it with salt/pepper/paprika and other spices. Then you put it in the cage with him and he goes after it like a bolt of lightning.

Karina you are such a dork! but a funny one...

Hey Amber,

I know you had lots of other pets--(I don't remember Buttons and Flyer) I just thought it was funny that a soft fluffy cat had the same name as the reptile...

Ugh, those crickets do stink. But not as bad as I imagined. Santa better not get any big ideas in that department for any of my young uns.

Well, Amber forgot to mention our first pet named "Petri" a darling mallard duck that could almost out race Amber across the back yard in Texas. And yes the crickets smell terrible if Spencer forgets to feed and water them. Sicko. He is the only one who has his bedroom window open now ---year round-!!! Then it ain't so bad. Tiger has proven to be a great pet and I think Santa should bring one to your boys. It is a great alternative to electronics.

Becky, way to go on the fun
pictures that your camera took. Scott- we hope you made it home okay and thanks for surprising us all. Do it again soon. I need a nephew around like Cameron and Lincoln. Man thay are so fun. How is Jill doing these days? Is she walking?
Love ya'll. Happy December. Barbara

OK, we are back from the Santa Maria trip, which was a wild experience in many ways, but fun too. Anyway - hey Becky the photos are great - and the babies are growing so fast - put a rock on their heads, will ya? And I love the reptile pictures, and the family dinner at the end. And the trick (whatever it was)

We actually had a Thanksgiving dinner here with about 60 people in Sao Paulo who are here on missions or working for a company. They all live in very fancy and beautiful places, compared with what we have, but we are happy to have what we have compared to what we could have had, or what Dad had in 1961-2. Our dinner was wonderful - but we left the next day by plane for Porto Alegre and drove to Santa Maria. On the way back in our rental car through the beautiful mountains there, Dad stopped and we picked up 10 large pine cones, I decorated them for the office staff here and gave them out this morning. Great free gift. Man, our trip was such an experience, and I will write more about it in an email. Thanks for the update on Thanksgiving. We love you all so much - the people here ask us if we miss you. It´s hard to be asked that!

Oh yea, I forgot about Petri! I had a duck named Pocahontas too. I had fun with my pet's names. You know what Aunt Becky, I think it's pretty funny that his lizard has the same name as my lovable cat did too. Guess who suggested the name "Tiger" for that reptile anyway? ME! but I was kidding!
Yeah, Aunt Karina, Spencer's favorite delicacy is chocolate covered crickets. He eats 'em by the bushel.
